Tip-of-the-hat Tuesday: Batting helmet edition

First things first, thanks to my dear friend Miss Crystal for the adorable blog title idea!

I took up crocheting fairly recently and had only followed patterns until this point, so this particular project was a bit of a challenge for me.

My father-in-law is a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan and had a birthday coming up. I had the idea to make him a winter hat (and completely ignore the fact that his birthday is in May) and figured the only way he'd ever actually wear it was if his only granddaughter had one to match. I really wanted to make the hats look like batting helmets, and was bummed to find that no such pattern seemed to exist on the internet! But the red yarn was on sale, dammit...I wasn't about to give up.

So it was time to get creative with it! I started with a basic beanie pattern, then crocheted about half way around before turning the hat and repeating. On the larger hat, I increased the first and last stitches, then kind of freehanded an earflap with a hole. I'm not even entirely sure how I created the earflap on the baby hat... But regardless, here they are, in all their glory.

You can tell she just loved wearing it.
